## What is the Parnassian Movement? - A group of French poets opposed to romanticism. They were positivists. *See:* [[Positivism]] The name eludes to Mount Parnassus, the home of the Muses in Greek Mythology. ## How was it opposed to the Romantics? - They believed in art for art's sake. As well as, exactness. They thought the romantics weren't disciplined and were overly sentimental. - I think it's like a lot of opposition movements. The Parnassian's wanted to be seen as the pinnacle of art and its creation. Whereas the romantics were just out there doing the work. Kind of elitist if you ask me. ## Influential Persons - [Charles Leconte de Lisle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Leconte_de_Lisle "Charles Leconte de Lisle"), [Théodore de Banville](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th%C3%A9odore_de_Banville "Théodore de Banville"), [Sully Prudhomme](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sully_Prudhomme "Sully Prudhomme"), [Stéphane Mallarmé](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C3%A9phane_Mallarm%C3%A9 "Stéphane Mallarmé"), [Paul Verlaine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Verlaine "Paul Verlaine"), [François Coppée](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7ois_Copp%C3%A9e "François Coppée"), [Nina de Callias](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_de_Callias "Nina de Callias"), and [José María de Heredia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Mar%C3%ADa_de_Heredia "José María de Heredia").
