How does one navigate the Bhagavad Gita?
No knowledge of the Muahabharata.
Just two copies of the text,
And pure stubborn will.
I’m blind.
I tentatively reach out my fingertips for context,
and fall head over heels into war.
I make a character list.
I forget it.
There’s a meteor cruising by,
Crashing to earth.
Suddenly I don’t know who to root for,
And Arjuna falls to the ground in despair.
I sit next to him in the dust.
Somewhere in the gleaming chaos,
Bhishma is going to die.
Somewhere Sikhandin is fighting.
Somewhere a blind king asks about what is happening,
and whom the gods favor.
In my mind I pan over the battle field,
All this is the price of a singular injustice.
A game of dice for a kingdom.
A family divided.
I think about injustice and evil.
How it bends the moral arc of the universe.
I listen to the original Sanskrit,
And linger on the words.
I want to shout,
But cannot find my voice.
I sit silent.
Listening to Krishna’s reply,
And in it see the echoes of infinity.
